Beautiful pearl in the Indian Ocean. The country with probably the most perfect climate in the world: 25-30°C all year round, and just enough rain to keep things lush and green - a bit more in the south, a bit less in the north - as the tail of the monsoons hit the island. No volcanoes, no earthquakes, rarely a moderate taifoon. No wonder no-one was prepared for the disastrous tsunami on December 26, 2004.

The only black shadow on this island of tranquility is the endless list LTTE terrorist atrocities - currently dying out fast. Let us all pray this horrible period will be over soon.

Tourists will be flooding the island again very soon, with its rich, 3,500 year old historic culture, beautiful landscapes and exotic palm-fringed beaches. There's so much to discover! No other island in the world offers such a large spread of variety in such a small area.

Hence, we have prepared two sets of maps for you: a set of road maps, and a set of cultural citymaps.

We have two sets of maps available for you:

1 - A country road map, covering the whole island in detail. Twenty maps in total, giving you an insight in the road structure: Main roads, secundary roads, small roads, and where available, even 4WD and dirt tracks.

The map sections are generously overlapping, so don't think that the map section QE-1 is missing! Each section is approximately 6,500 x 7,500 pixels with a filesize of 4-5 Mb on average, manageable for most PDA's and smartphones. The GPS version is delivered in OziExplorer's optimised file format, with it's own seamless sizing, at any zoom setting. For longer road stretches, a zoom level of 50% works fine. For a detailed view, e.g. in an urban area, a zoom setting of 150 to 200 % gives the perfect picture, even on the smaller screen of a smartphone, making sure you won't miss a junction.

2 - Town maps

For all main cities and tourist destinations, even more detailed maps have been made: Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Anuradapura, etc.

The level of detail is adapted to the situation. While the Colombo map is focused on street names and important buildings, the map for Anuradhapura puts emphasis on cultural highlights and hotel accommodation. For Anuradhapura, the major archeological site of Abhayagiriya, north of the city, is mapped out in the best possible detail.
